Paul M. McDermott, Esq., a native of the Washington, D.C. metro area and trial lawyer since 2001, has represented over 2,000 clients in a variety of cases including family law, criminal law and personal injury. Mr. McDermott earned his Juris Doctor degree in 2001 from Regent University School of Law in Virginia. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1998, where he double majored in history and sociology and was a member of the pre-law society.
In 2002, Mr. McDermott began his legal career in the suburban Washington D.C. area of northern Virginia as an associate attorney with a family law and civil litigation firm. In 2005, Mr. McDermott relocated to Virginia Beach, Virginia and started his own firm and built a successful general practice representing hundreds of clients in divorce, child custody, child support, criminal defense and personal injury matters.
In 2006, Mr. McDermott was certified by the Supreme Court of Virginia as a Guardian ad litem to represent the best interests of children in court. Over the years he has advocated for child victims of abuse and neglect cases. He received judicial appointments in custody cases to investigate and recommend to the court what would be in the best interests of children.
After years of representing a broad range of clients and recognizing the intense emotional, financial and unique spiritual challenges faced by individuals and families in domestic relations cases, Mr. McDermott decided to obtain formal pastoral training to help guide his clients through the tumultuous times they face. In 2013, Mr. McDermott earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Practical Theology from Christ For The Nations Institute in Dallas, Texas. Mr. McDermott is uniquely equipped to provide both the legal and spiritual counsel needed to navigate his clients through their case.
After completing his theological and pastoral training in Texas, Mr. McDermott passed the Florida Bar Exam in 2014 and earned his Florida law license. Mr. McDermott decided to focus his law practice on Florida Marital and Family Law and accepted a position as a managing partner at a leading family law firm in Delray Beach, FL. While at the firm, he and a team of lawyers represented clients exclusively in marital and family law matters. Mr. McDermott represented clients at trial for divorces, paternity/custody actions, injunctions for orders of protection, child support issues and a variety of other sensitive family law matters.
In 2016, Mr. McDermott and his wife and three children relocated to the Manatee/Sarasota area and launched his firm, McDermott Law Offices, PLLC, in Lakewood Ranch. The firm focuses exclusively on Marital and Family law cases and represents a diverse range of clients in litigation, mediation and collaboration.
Paul McDermott, Esq. is a member of the Manatee Bar Association, Sarasota Bar Association, the Family Law Section of the Florida State Bar, the 12th Judicial Circuit Family Court Professionals Collaborative (FCPC). He is also a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Law Mediator. He is also a member of "Next Generation Divorce" and is trained in Collaborative Divorce Law.
